The friendly, playful, and loving gang of kids from Riverdale are back with a new series, but it is one that is unlike anything they've ever been involved with before. The NY Daily News reported on Oct. 8, 2013, that "Afterlife With Archie" will debut on Wednesday and it will be a big change for fans of Archie Comics as the publisher will now venture into the horror world.
Not only will this be the first horror title from Archie Comics, but the first book that has a rating making it just for teens. The "Afterlife With Archie" series will also only be sold in comic book shops.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will write the series which is to be illustrated by Franceco Francavilla.
In the series, Archie, Jughead, Reggie, Veronica, Betty, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and others will have to deal with the undead, elder gods, and much more. There are also nods to horror icons such as Freddy Krueger, Nosferatu, and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" among others.
"It's a hardcore horror book," said Aguirre-Sacasa, a Harvey Award-winning writer who melded his personal interests and horror obsessions into influences for the book. "This is why I was meant to do comics."
One of the coolest things about this series is that "Afterlife With Archie" won't change who the characters are. Aguirre-Sacasa says that Sabrina is "always messing up" and Jughead is "always hungry." It is a "traditional Archie Comic" thrown into a world of horror.
"We are taking a series of characters known to be light-hearted and young adult-oriented and doing a horror comic with them, so the mood, atmosphere, and setting are very important to make this a believable horror and not a comedy horror," the Eisner awarding-winning artist said in an email.
"Fortunately, I am really good at making things dark and ominous."
"Afterlife With Archie" will be a monthly series beginning on Oct. 9, 2013.
