The FDA has approved the after sex contraceptive pill sold under the name ella™. The name for this new prescription is not capitalized and reports do not indicate the reasoning for this marketing choice.

There has been much controversy about ella™ and other after sex pills that could be or are already marketed for contraception. Those protesting the use of such a drug state religious and ethical beliefs for not wanting any type of after sex pill on the market.

This prescription pill contains ulipristal acetate and is considered an emergency contraception. It is claimed that ellawill prevent pregnancy if it is taken with 5 days after sex.

Some side effects can include headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness and more.  The product’s information states that women who are pregnant should not take ella™. Also, ella™ would be contraindicated for women who are breast feeding. To review health issues such as adverse reactions, drug interactions and more details about ella™ follow this link.

Sometimes referred to as ECPs, emergency contraception pills such as ella™ are relatively new to the United States with Europe being in the lead. Also called Plan B contraception by some, certain after sex pills are available without a prescription. These do not contain ulipristal acetate and can be purchased through a pharmacist by any one over the age of 18.

Now that ella™ has been approved by the FDA it is expected this pill will be available in the United States this year. Currently manufactured by a company in Paris, ella™ will be offered in the United States by Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
