Although Movember (Mustache-November) is in the past, we cannot forget about the cause for another year. Movember is an awareness and fundraising campaign for prostate and testicular cancers in men. This year, participants in Movember raised more than $60 million for the cause! Our very own Predators took part in this worthy cause! A big shout out to the Predators!!

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men other than skin cancer. Approximately 32,050 men will die of prostate cancer this year, and 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed during his lifetime. Although skin cancer is the most common, prostate cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer fatalities in men, lagging only behind lung cancer. About 1 man in 35 will die of prostate cancer. There is an increased risk among African American males, which the racial difference is undetermined at present.

Health care providers should discuss the potential benefits and limitations of [prostate cancer early detection testing] with men and offer the PSA blood test and the digital rectal examination annually, beginning at age 50, to men who are at average risk of prostate cancer, and who have a life expectancy of at least 10 years.* Men at high risk (African American men and men with a strong family history of one or more first-degree relatives diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age) should have this discussion with their provider at age 45.

For prostate cancer victims, early diagnosis and treatment is strongly recommended to preserve sexual function in a relationship.
