Years ago, a popular TV show called “Candid Camera” spawned a not terribly successful movie titled “What Do You Say to a Naked Lady?” Maybe the film failed because of its R rating, but the title question was revisited in slightly altered form in Fredericksburg, Va., on Friday, when a man “was cited for walking around town naked from the waist down.”
CBS DC notes that the unnamed man succeeded in having the case dismissed do to a loophole that prohibits public nudity in restaurants, bars, and similar establishments, but not outdoors. The city council plans to begin re-examining the law and expects to have an amendment to it no later than Jan. 22.
According to City Attorney Kathleen Dooley, the code is also limited to exposing oneself with the intention of performing an obscene act, not nudity for nudity’s sake. The reason for the delay in the recasting of law is that an ordinance must be voted on twice before it can become enacted.
Dooley is quoted as saying:
We would not expect our citizens or our visitors or young children simply walking on a downtown street to encounter a naked person. It just is not something that is consistent with the city values.
