After Just One Season, Derek Rang Resigns at Powell

Powell is back on the market for a new football coach after Derek Rang resigned this morning after being on the job for just one season.

Rang led the Panthers to the Class 5A Semifinals and posted a 12-2 before bowing to Columbia in the playoffs.

"I have resigned at head football coach at Powell High School. This whole ordeal has tested my faith, strength, and emotion. I am truly grateful for coaching in the Powell Community. Many memories will forever be in my heart forever," Rang said via his Twitter account.

Rang has been on suspension with pay from the Knox County school system since December because of allegations of testing irregularities.

Rang started his coaching career at Anderson County as an assistant after graduating from nearby Maryville College where he played linebacker in 2007.

He spent 2007at Anderson County before moving to South Doyle for two seasons and became the defensive coordinator in 2009.

He then was the defensive coordinator at Knoxville West in 2010 and 2011 and the Rebels made the 5A Semifinals both seasons.

He played linebacker at Maryville College, and was a part of three Class 4A state championship title teams at Maryville high school in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
