It's May first, and also First Thursday at the Exploratorium. This month, along with the rest of San Francisco, the are celebrating Carnaval. This year's theme is 'La Rhumba de la Copa Mundial---Celebration of the World's Cup'. San Francisco's Carnaval is the largest multi-cultural festival on the West Coast showcasing the music, art, and traditions of the native Mission District, Latin America, and the Caribbean. It will be celebrated on Memorial Day weekend, May 23rd to the 25th on Harrison St. between 16th and 24th streets, and culminating in the Grand Parade on Sunday. Imagine how the costumes will look with 'Celebrating the World's Cup' as the theme!

The Exploratorium is getting a head start on this celebration with one of their own. Community organizer, Carnaval Executive Producer, and guest curator Roberto Hernandez has teamed with the Exploratorium to provide you with dancing, music, entertainment, interactive pageantry, learning, and fun. Start with the 'Science of Soccer' with Exploratorium physicists Paul Doherty and Pearl Tesler, Take Zumba and Samba dance lessons, Hear Roberto Hernandez himself tell about how Carnaval began 36 years ago in 1978 with only a few hundred participants to how it's grown into a festival with a few hundred thousand. Join the drum circle and learn about the different drum styles and instruments and their history from Trinidad, Brazil, and other Latin American countries. If you enjoy 'hands on' activities, build an instrument to be used in this year's parade or take a workshop in making masks with the Explorable volunteers. Try on, and parade a costume from one of the Carnaval celebrations from previous years.

After Dark is for adults only, 18 years and older. Tickets are $15.00 for the general public, $10.00 for Members, and free for Lab Members. Some venues are limited seating and the price of admission does not guarantee a place. Limited seating venues are admitted on a first come, first served basis. As always there is a cash bar.

Head on down to Pier 15. After Dark starts at 6:00 PM and goes until 10:00 PM. That's today, Thursday (Exploratorium's First Thursday), May 1st. Get a head start on this colorful, joyous, and musical festival!!!
