One of Baltimore's few remaining medium sized live music venues will close its doors at the end of March only to reopen in the fall with a brand new identity. Recher Theatre is slated to start construction in April to turn the venue into a new night club called Torrent.
Those familiar with the Baltimore live music scene are no strangers to the venue but it's not necessarily love that kept us coming back. The venue itself wasn't very well kept, the bathrooms were a mess, the sound was just ok on its best days, and the lighting was rarely better than atrocious. With that being said we kept coming back. It's what we had and what we knew. It may not have been much but it was ours and so many music fans made a lot of memories there.
Owner Brian Recher told City Paper that this decision was the best choice for them: “The scene now is DJs. The live music scene is still good, but it’s down. . . This was strictly a business decision.”
While that may be true, the live music scene will take another hit by the loss of this venue only about a year after Sonar closed its doors. Local bands and smaller national acts may struggle to find a venue in Baltimore.
