After 10, T-Yanks defeat Cubs 6-5

The Tampa Yankees were at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Thursday evening to begin a three game series against the Daytona Cubs. LHP Dan Camarena (ERA 5019) took the start for the T-Yanks in this Game 1 matchup as he looked for his first win of the season after a shaky 0-2 start.

The T-Yanks got on the board first with a RBI double by Pete O’Brien. With a 1-0 Yanks lead Camarena was able to get himself out of some trouble to end the first. Jake Cave was able to give some run support as he hit his first triple of the season with Zach Wilson on base. Wilson wasn’t done just yet when he hit a RBI single in the third to send Eric Jagielo home to put Tampa up 3-0.

Camarena allowed a homerun by Daytona’s Tim Saunders on a fly ball on left to start the 3rd. With a 3-1 game, the T-Yanks were able to bounce back as Dante Bichette hit his 6th double of the season on a ground ball to right field at the top of the inning. After a pitching change by the Cubs, O’Brien then walked putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Angelo Gumbs then singled making it bases loaded no outs. After Wilson grounded out, the Yanks were able to get one run in by Bichette to extend their lead to a 4-1 game.

Camarena continued to hang in there as the offense cushioned their lead even more with another triple by Cave. But, it was the 6th inning that would end the night for the lefty. Camarena pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing 4 hits and 4 runs; striking out 3. With a 5-4 ballgame, LHP Evan Rutckyj (ERA 0.00) the pitched the next 1 2/3 innings allowing just 1 hit and keeping a steady pace for the T-Yanks.

In the top of the 8th, RHP Phil Wetherell (ERA 0.00) took over pitching duties for Tampa. Wetherell allowed the tying run by the Cubs in the bottom of the 8th and would then be replaced by RHP Kyle Haynes (ERA 2.57) in the 9th inning. Wetherell finished the night allowing 2 hits and 1 run.

With the Yanks unable to pull out a run in the 9th, the game then headed to extra innings.

Haynes pitched a solid two innings allowing just 1 hit and secured his first victory of the season with the 6-5 win. Rutckyj earned the hold (H,1) and Wetherell was charged with the blown save (BS,1).

The Tampa Yankees will take on the Daytona Cubs in the second game of the series on Friday evening at 7:05pm.
