Today the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) launched an online publishing tool for members to submit letters to their local newspapers to protest sequestration cuts to Education.
AFT Media Affairs Manager Marcus Mrowka wrote to AFT members, urging them to become e-Activists:
'If Congress fails to act, the impact sequestration will have on our children, families, jobs and communities will be devastating. These cuts will slash vital services for children, seniors, people with mental illness and those in need of healthcare.
'Does your neighbor know what’s at stake under sequestration?
'Submit a Letter to the Editor through our tool to make sure your whole community is aware.'
Mrowka insists that Congress must act immediately on finding a more balanced approach that will stop cuts on education and instead invest in children and communities by closing tax loopholes for the wealthiest Americans and big corporations.
Here is what AFT claims is at stake:
- Cuts to education
- Cuts to law enforcement and emergency responders
- Cuts to small business
- Cuts to food and drug safety
- Cuts to mental health services
- Cuts to research and innovation
- Cuts to programs senior citizens rely on
- Cuts to the IRS, slowing down tax returns
Mrowka concludes,
'Congress must live up to its responsibility to the American people, put a stop to this endless charade of manufactured crises, and start investing in building a brighter future for all who call America home.
'Submit a letter to your local paper urging Congress to act on these devastating
cuts.'
