An African Serval cat was shot dead in Detroit. The four-foot tall feline was seen roaming the streets of the Motor City. According to CBS Detroit on August 27, 2013, the big cat has been killed. Laura Wilhelm-Bruzek, part of a feral cat rescue group who tried to catch it alive, saw a photo of the dead animal.
'It got out of its owner’s home about a month ago through a screened-in window. So, we have been out there day and night, trying to set traps out to get this cat,'
The African Serval cat was killed by a neighbor and placed in a garbage can. The 25-pound pet named "Chum," was no threat in spite of its looks and size. According to Wilhelm-Bruzek the cat was not dangerous and there are several pictures of neighbors petting the cat when it was alive.
This African Serval cat was actually a Savannah, which results when they are bred with a domestic feline. Although they look like leopards or wildcats, they are legal to own. Wilhelm-Bruzek is hoping for an investigation, even though initially Michigan Humane Society and Detroit Police refused to look into the matter when contacted by neighbors
