Ben Affleck and Lena Dunham have certainly been the toast of the town this awards show season. Affleck has already won best director and best picture at both the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards and his film, Argo, took home best ensemble cast at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards. Now, he can add another award to his trophy shelf. Affleck won Outstanding Directorial Achievement In a Feature Film at the 65th annual Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Awards Dinner on Saturday, February 2 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles, CA.
Affleck was famously denied a nomination for the 85th annual Academy Awards and since then, he has taken home a best director award at almost every awards ceremony. Many felt that Affleck was robbed. After all he did have a long career as an actor in which many maligned his acting ability but praised his directorial pursuits. Argo is the fourth film Affleck has directed and many who have seen it consider it his masterpiece. A directorial win on Oscar night would have been the cherry on top of his awards show sundae and validation for a long career. However, his recent rash of wins will have to provide solace to him when his name isn’t called on Oscar night in the best director category. Argo still has the opportunity to win Best Picture.
Dunham on the other hand is only 26 years old. She has a hit show on HBO called Girls where she produces, directs, writes and acts in the show and she’s already taken home two Golden Globe awards; one for acting and one for Best TV Comedy or Musical. The show is renewed for a third season and its second season is airing on HBO now. In between filming and the infinitesimal amount of sleep that she undoubtedly gets, Dunham was able to accept the DGA award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement In A Comedy Series. Dunham actually gave a nod to Affleck in her acceptance speech. She said, “Steven Speilberg, I’m coming for you. Affleck I already came for you." It's clear that Dunham sets the bar very high for herself and her success is proof that she rightfully should.
