About 56.7 million Americans — 11.9% of the total population — reported Irish ancestry to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2008. The Aer Lingus Vacation Store is offering a perfect opportunity to track down Irish ancestors with its Discover Your Roots: Genealogy Vacation.

This spectacular opportunity begins with a night at the 5-star Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin where travelers will have a one-hour consultation with the hotel's Genealogy Butler, Helen Kelly. Based upon your own family's information (which participants are asked to provide as much as they have), this experienced researcher will do preliminary legwork, draw up a personalized plan to help travelers navigate state and church records, and work to set them in the right direction to actually find the place their relatives called home.

I have had the privilege of having research done by Helen Kelly and found this to be an excellent experience. I personally recommend it.

Whether a family's roots are in County Mayo, County Wexford, or elsewhere on the Emerald Isle, participants can then set a course for five nights, traveling through beautiful countryside in their rental car. It is the perfect opportunity to visit historic castles, archaeological sites, and such natural attractions as the Cliffs of Moher as they also experience firsthand the villages of family legend and possibly run into long lost relatives at a local pub. The pre-paid bed and breakfast vouchers let vacationers set their own pace. To truly experience life as a local, travelers will stay in traditional Irish homesteads or working modern farms and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of the Irish people whilst your own family history.
