Once again, Adventure Time does a beautiful job presenting a real-world problem in a fictional world. Memories of Boom Boom Mountain does an excellent job depicting the realistic struggles of the characters, but in a rare event for Adventure Time, falls short descriptively at the exact source of the problem itself.
This episode depicts Finn’s morality, and his goal to help everyone in need no matter how small their problem. While noble, this is ultimately foolish, and leads to hysterical chaos as everyone begs for Finn’s attention to solve their petty problems.
While not necessarily adventurers, it’s easy to see how this can relate to our own lives. The saying ‘Don’t bite off more than you can chew’ comes to mind. This otherwise excellent episode begins to fray when Finn mentions why he made the oath to help those in need. His reasoning is that he once, as a baby, laid in his own poop, and no one helped him.
While I admire Adventure Time for not going with the obvious ‘evil people killed my parents’ route, this seems so ridiculously far-fetched it rips me out of my immersion in the episode. Really? He committed his life to goodness because he sat in shit? What?
What really causes me to cringe is the fact that this is NOT a fleeting episode in the show. This moment is referenced many times in future episodes, and is always a moment of sad acceptance.
The rest of the episode is well done, as Finn slowly works with everyone to solve all of their problems. True to his word he succeeds, and life in Ooo can resume its normal, albeit weird, pace.
