The Adventist Youth Ministries Department of the Atlantic Union Conference will distribute 1,000 free school backpacks on Sunday to elementary and middle school students at the Coney Island Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brooklyn, NY.
The backpacks are embossed with two hands which form a heart and the words, "because actions speak louder than words," symbolizing the compassion movement which has engaged youth and young adults to perform acts of kindness in their communities.
The Back to School Compassion Bash is the second of its kind hosted in New York City by the Conference's youth leadership team. On September 8, more than 600 volunteers distributed 4,000 backpacks, t-shirts, water bottles, and snacks to the thousands of parents and children who stood outside of the former Far Rockaway High School. The Bash was a collaboration of the Adventist Youth Ministries departments from the Atlantic Union, Greater New York, and Northeastern conferences. It was sponsored by the North American Division Adventist Community Services Department who allocated over $90,000 for the event.
The Church is located at 2835 West 17th Street Brooklyn, NY 11234. Parents must be accompanied with every child who will receive a backpack and are required to complete a registration card. In addition to the backpack distribution, which will run from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the Church parking lot, a health van will be on-site to provide checkups.
