Have you ever wondered about the benefits of volunteering your services to a company or organization ? I say, if you can afford it, and have the time, do it ! There are several advantages to volunteering your skills or, in other words, working for free. Besides the obvious benefits of serving your community, and building self-confidence, there is always the chance that they (the company) may, at some point, offer you a paying position.
It is imperative that you do your research before accepting a volunteer job. Know exactly what the job entails, and get a copy of the job description, if possible. Even though you will not be paid in the position, volunteering is a great stepping stone to being exposed to different jobs within a company. You will also learn how various departments function, get accustomed to the working environment as a whole, and meet a variety of new and interesting people.
Volunteering your services can look awful attractive on your resume, and should be added under work experience. Every person you meet during your volunteerism can be a networking treasure trove. Be sure to meet the key players in the organization, and make a memorable impression on them by doing a great job. And when the opportunity arises, you may be able to ask them for a recommendation, or reference letter.
So, even though the pay is lousy (non-existent), the future financial rewards can be great. So, get out there and volunteer !
