Ads extend affiliation, Geoffrion to Montreal, Milwaukee wins 5-3 in OKC

It's been a busy 24 hours for the Milwaukee Admirals to say the very least.

Yesterday, the team announced that it had extended its affiliation with parent club Nashville Predators through the 2013-2014 season, with a mutual option for the 2014-2015 season. According to the official press release from the Nashville Predators, more than 120 players have played for both teams since the partnership began back when Nashville got its franchise starting in the 1998-1999 season. The Milwaukee/Nashville affiliation is the third-longest in the American Hockey League according to the AHL's press release. The Providence/Boston affiliation is the longest in the league, dating back to 1992, while Connecticut/New York Rangers dates back to 1997.

This afternoon, news broke of Admirals forward Blake Geoffrion being traded to Montreal in exchange for Stanley Cup winning defenseman Hal Gill. The full trade included Geoffrion, forward Robert Slaney and a second round pick in the 2012 draft in exchange for Gill and a conditional 5th round draft pick in the 2013 draft to Montreal. According to Nashville Predators Examiner Jim Diamond, the 6'7 241-pound Gill, who was serving as an assistant captain in Montreal, is slated to become an unrestrcted free agent at the end of the season. The Admirals are in Oklahoma City playing a double-header this weekend, winning tonight's contest 5-3 against the Western Conference leading Oklahoma City Barons. Defenseman Tyler Sloan notched his first goal of the season, marking his first goal in the AHL since February of 2009. After trailing 2-0 in the opening half of the first period, the team rallied with four unanswered goals after which the Barons could not recover. The team went 0 for 2 on the power-play, but held Oklahoma City to just one power-play goal out of six opportunities. Jeremy Smith got his 20th win of the season, stopping 29 of 32 shots faced, while Yann Danis took his ninth loss of the season with 21 saves on 25 shots.

Milwaukee and Oklahoma City face off again tomorrow night before returning home for a 3-in-3 weekend, starting Friday night against the West Division Abbotsford Heat.
