Female amateur kickboxer, Adrienne Simon, 34, has died after being knocked out by her opponent, Lindsay Scheer, in her division final at the 2010 IKF World Classic Championships that were held at the Orlando World Center Mariott Resort in Orlando, Fla. last weekend.
Police ruled her death an accident since she succumbed to her injuries two days after suffering a fatal left hook in round three of her fight at the competition. IKF officials could not be reached for comment since their office is currently closed.
It is surprising that Simon suffered severe head trauma in spite of wearing the mandatory protective head gear for amateur competitions in Fla. Legal competition head gear has no jaw bars and less padding on the ears which would allow for a serious concussion to develop if the force of the impact landed on the unprotected portion of a fighters face.
"It's very sad. I don't know the details," said Nick Smith, mixed martial arts promoter and matchmaker for Art of Fighting. "I would wonder if they had an ambulance there and if the fight should have been stopped at some point (prior to the knockout)."
However, there was no paramedic or ambulance on site according to News 13.
Furthermore, the Associated Press reported that the ring side physician treated Simon after her knockout. She then spent the next two days at a hospital where she died on Monday.
