Provided a deal is finalized, the 24-year-old Broner (27-0, 22 KOs) is expected to scrap the 30-year-old Maidana (34-3, 31 KOs) on December 14 at the MGM Grand.
Ranked as the seventh preeminent pound-for-pounder in the world, Broner earned a split decision over Paulie Malignaggi on June 22 to capture the WBA crown.
Prior to winning his third belt in as many weight classes, the cocky, flamboyant and simply unlikable Broner eagerly added 12 pounds to meet Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KOs).
Malignaggi is a brilliant defensive pugilist capable of causing any opponent to struggle in the squared circle.
Regardless, an outclassed Malignaggi managed to make “The Problem” look mediocre.
Conversely, a former junior welterweight titlist, Maidana most recently exited the ring on June 8 with a sixth round TKO victory over Josésito López.
A beloved Argentinean, Maidana is a bruiser whose punches land with thuds.
Should the two prizefighters tussle, the bout will pit Broner’s speed and skills against Maidana’s power.
