Adrien Broner and Marcos Maidana will fight again

Adrien Broner has exercised his rematch option and will face Marcos Maidana in April at either the Alamodome or StubHub Center.

Marcos Maidana battered Adrien Broner.

The 30-year-old Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs) earned a unanimous decision over the 24-year-old Broner (27-1, 22 KOs) to capture the WBA welterweight title on December 14.

According to the Associated Press, Maidana officially trumped Broner by scores of 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109.

A powerful and beloved Argentinean, Maidana outworked Broner and floored the loudmouth in the second and eighth rounds.

Maidana, who is also a past junior welterweight champion, was far more active than Broner and landed bruising punches throughout the 36-minute slugfest.

Broner’s trainer, Mike Stafford, predicts that his fighter will overcome Maidana in their sequel this spring.

"This time, Adrien can do it if he does early like he did in the later rounds,” said Stafford. “If Adrien starts out in the fight like he did in the later rounds, then he wins the fight. He can't have the second and eighth rounds. The second and the eighth rounds killed him."

Broner must use his blinding speed and vast overall skills to neutralize Maidana’s intimidating style and cement fists.

However, even if Broner creates a solid scheme, Maidana may have exposed “The Problem” as nothing more than a fragile blowhard.

Previously ranked as the world’s ninth premier pound-for-pounder, Broner should return to the lightweight division and avoid Maidana.

Although “Adrien can do it,” Marcos Maidana is probably too rugged for “The Problem.”
