If you think of supermodels as delicate, fragile creatures who dine on lettuce leaves and stroll on the catwalk for exercise, Adriana Lima wants to prove you wrong. She revealed her slimming secrets, from boxing to a protein-rich Paleo diet, to E News on Thursday.
A Victoria's Secret Angel, Adriana is a boxing devotee. She works out regularly with her personal trainer, Michael Olajide Jr., co-founder and chief instructor of Aerospace gym in New York.
Michael is the author of "Sleekify!: The Supercharged No-Weights Workout to Sculpt and Tighten Your Body in 28 Days." And Adriana is such a believer in his methods that she wrote the preface to his guide.
She has worked out with Michael for 10 years. "The first time wasn’t easy, it was very hard, you know, you have to learn how to move the rope and then breathing was the most difficult part," she admitted in an interview with Women's Wear Daily.
Now, however, Adriana is skilled enough to help lead workouts. The routines involve 45 minutes of shadow boxing, jumping rope and sculpting. And she's not the only supermodel involved: Arlenis Sosa Peña and Emanuela de Paula join her at the gym.
The Aerospace gym has created a fitness DVD for those who want to try the workout at home. It's called "AeroSpace NYC: Aero Jump/Sculpt" and involves both sculpting and cardio.
Boxing is not a temporary way of staying slim for modeling, says Adriana. "One day my job is going to stop. But this is never going to stop."
In addition to her "passion" for boxing, Adriana has a passion for the Paleo diet. Nutritional and lifestyle guru Dr. Charles Passler numbers her among his clients, and he told E News that the low carb caveman diet is ideal for women who want to slim down or stay sleek.
"No processed foods including breads and pasta, while also eliminating or minimizing grains—wheat, rye etc. Dairy is also eliminated or minimized," he said.
What can you eat? "The Paleo diet is a lower carb-eating program based on consuming mainly protein (meat, fish, poultry, eggs) and lower starch vegetables, such as leafy greens," he said.
One question that often arises about using the Paleo low carb diet for weight loss and health: How to know the number of carbohydrates to consume daily. On his Web site, Paleo guru Mark Sisson answers that question.
By eating 50 to 100 grams per day, you can achieve what Mark terms the "Primal Sweet Spot for Effortless Weight Loss. Author of "The Primal Blueprint: Reprogram your genes for effortless weight loss, vibrant health, and boundless energy," Mark feels that range boosts fat metabolism.
In addition, Mark recommends focusing on vegetables, fruits and high fat foods that include eggs, fish, meat, nuts and seeds. "You can lose one to two pounds of body fat per week and then keep it off forever by eating in the maintenance range," he advises.
