Adopt A Gluten-Free Blogger
Many people with celiac disease or gluten-sensitivity spend hours pouring over gluten-free blogs to find the latest information in the gluten-free community. It takes careful research to know that Disney Princess Chewable Vitamins are gluten-free and safe for your little celiac princess, and that some charcoal briquettes contain wheat starch which contaminate your food when grilling?!? And what about those gorgeous photographs of delicious gluten-free food with hundreds, if not thousands of recipes to choose from? If you’re anything like me you spend hours pouring over those delicious looking recipes and starring them in your Google Reader only to then head to your freezer to pop in an Amy’s Gluten-Free frozen meal. And not that there’s anything wrong with Amy’s (LOVE her food), but come on people, turn your stove on, dust off that spatula, and find your inner chef: it’s time to adopt a gluten-free blogger!
Adopt a Gluten-Free Blogger was created for simply this reason, to give you the accountability to get out of your office (or 9 x 13 bedroom in some small Manhattan cases, cough cough) and try those recipes you’ve been eyeing on your favorite gluten-free blog! Created by Sea from The Book of Yum, the program has had great success. Last month is was guest hosted by Iris from The Daily Dietribe and the results from everyone’s “adopting” go up in just a few days. I strongly encourage you to check out the program and get involved yourself. I had no idea I was capable of a “deep fry,” but guess what? I AM! And the food was delicious, and my family was impressed (to say the least).
For May I adopted Kim from Cook It Allergy Free. Her blog, while still relatively new, contained so many mouth-watering recipes I found myself lingering wistfully on each page reading each unique ingredient that went into her dishes. Well, last month I stopped reading and actually cooked. The result: Awesome. What drew me to Kim’s blog is that she isn’t just focused on gluten. As many of you know, gluten sensitivity or celiac disease often comes hand-in-hand with other food allergies and Kim’s recipes let everyone eat, literally! She even has an iPhone & iPad app out which you can download on iTunes. The jist of her blog (and app) is this – any of the top eight allergens (and probably a few others) can be substituted in her recipes. She’ll give you the original recipe and then alter it in anyway to make sure it works for everyone! Can’t have shellfish, try this; can’t have egg, use this instead. It’s the greatest way to have a dinner party and leave everyone satisfied and with a happy tummy (quite literally).
Check my video below where I tackle Kim’s Gluten-Free Beer-Battered Coconut Shrimp (I’m the first video blogger to participate in the program, so my finished product is a little different) and finally, stop reading and start cooking and sharing your experiences too!
