Football uniforms have come a long way since the days when facemasks were not a part of the game. Today's college football uniforms seem to be more about style than anything else, but innovation continues to be a leading trend in what the players wear on Saturdays in autumn. This week Adidas will begin outfitting some programs in an updated uniform designed to give the team an added advantage.
The TECHFIT football jerseys, as Adidas has branded the new line of apparel, are lighter and are designed to keep players dryer on the field, preventing sweat from weighing down the uniform. The look is a bit more tight fitting compared to the traditional uniforms as well, which should ideally make teams tougher to tackle in any condition. There are fewer seams in the jerseys and a high-stretch collar is designed to allow for more flexibility and smoother, and easier, movement.
“The new TECHFIT jersey design will make old jerseys obsolete,” said Mark Daniels, director of football and team sports for Adidas. “Adidas is changing the game with this revolutionary jersey construction and compression fit because we know the right gear can make a difference during a split second play."
“Less material and a tighter fit means the jersey is harder to grab and you can’t tackle what you can’t grab," Daniels continues. "College football is more competitive than ever before and teams need every advantage they can get on the field.”
The jerseys will be displayed this Friday night when Louisville and Cincinnati face off in Big East action. Both schools have been sent the uniforms but only Cincinnati will wear the uniforms for this game. Cincinnati will be wearing a white jersey Friday night and will wear a red and a black version later in the season.
Texas A&M will wear their jerseys on Saturday when they open their Big 12 schedule against Missouri. Tennessee will wear their TECHFIT jerseys on October 23 when they take on the defending BCS champions, Alabama.
Notre Dame also has received the TECHFIT jerseys and will wear them this weekend when the Irish host Western Michigan. UCLA and Michigan will also be suiting up in the advanced uniforms as early as this weekend.
