Singer Adele just might be one of the more recognizable celebrities of the past half-decade, but there is one driving instructor in England that not only saw her successfully master the test but also didn't know who she was. According to the Oscar and multiple Grammy-winning recording artist, instructor Noel Gaughan still had no idea who she was even after she sang a few lines from her internationally famous catalog of songs.
The Telegraph reported Oct. 17 that this has become routine for Gaughan, this not recognizing famous people who come to him for driving lessons. He's also instructed One Direction's Niall Horan, model Pixie Geldof, Mumford and Sons bassist Edward Dwayne, and "X Men" and "The Last King of Scotland" actor James McAvoy, among others.
In fact, not recognizing celebrities has gotten him a few referrals. You see, Gaughan isn't a pop culture follower, doesn't keep up with the latest in music, television, or much in the popular media. He's an avid listener of Britain's Radio 4 but watches very little television and rarely reads magazines or tabloids.
Which makes him the perfect go-to driving instructor for those celebrities in the U. K. seeking their driving permits.
Yahoo OMG! reported last week that the 25-year-old "Someone Like You" singer excitedly tweeted that she had passed her driving test. But this week, it's her somewhat pop culture oblivious instructor that is making the headlines.
Noel Gaughan said he had no idea Niall Horan was famous until girls started thronging around the car, trying to get photos of the One Direction singer. He said he thought Niall was just "an ordinary lad."
As for Adele Adkins, who is currently at work on a new album, Gaughan found her a delight. "I didn't know who Adele was so she started singing in her lessons. The problem was I didn't know any of her songs. She would sing some beautiful songs and say 'you must know this one' but I don't really know many celebrities."
But that isn't all that important to him, it appears. What is? "Her little boy Angelo is doing absolutely brilliant. She is very much a proper mum who lives for her son.
"Driving will give her a bit of freedom and she is looking forward to be able to go off with just her and Angelo. She worked very hard with me and learned very quickly."
And besides being ecstatic over passing her driving test, what did Adele have to say about her driving instructor, who has been running Intensive Courses from his home (with wife, Gaynor) for 20 years?
"Noel is Dumbledore of roads," she wrote on his website. "Could not have done it without him and his jokes changed my life."
It also seems that Noel Gaughan, a. k. a. the "Dumbledore of Roads," will continue to be frequented by celebrities. He says that a few have already booked his services and some of the boys from One Direction have already expressed an interest in his driving course.
But having instructed Niall Horan, at least he'll know who these celebrities are -- and can prepare accordingly for the throngs of girls...
