Adele may have won more awards at last year's Grammys ceremony, but the 55th Annual Grammy Awards were quite kind to the new mum, as well. I was lucky enough to catch up with Adele backstage at Sunday's awards show, held downtown Los Angeles at the Staples Center, and was quick to congratulate her on her new win for best Pop Solo Performance.
Adele beamed and replied, "Thanks!" She looked radiant. When I watched her accept her award via the live-feed monitors in the media center, I wasn't sure what I thought about her dress. The long-sleeved floral Valentino had a busy, all-over print set in rich reds and pinks on the hint of a black background. The high neckline and incredibly full tea-length skirt was flattering on the British beauty, but I just couldn't decide how I felt about this dress. In person, however, I had far fewer doubts. When I spoke with Adele, I decided to focus on her new role as a mother. "You've been very private with what you make public concerning your baby, so I promise not to get too personal," I began. Adele gave a small, cautious nod as she smiled at my line of questioning. "How is this year different, approaching your career as a working mother as opposed to last year, when you were just this amazing artist, only responsible for yourself?"
Adele was quick with her light-hearted reply, "I've been up since six in the morning, so I'm quite tired! [Laugh] But it's nice, I haven't been as stressed out. You have to prioritize what you stress about when you have a child."
"They give you that balance," I remarked. Adele said, "Yeah, you know, getting my hair and make-up done's usually a blast, but now I'm like, get off, get off." Any busy mom can relate, celebrity or otherwise; you simply can't sit still for too long with a new baby around the house, whether you're getting ready for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards or just another day at the office. Babies don't care how much make-up we've got on, they just want our undivided attention!
Adele still has yet to officially announce her son's name, though she has been spotted out and about wearing a necklace that read, "Angelo" recently. I wanted to ask for confirmation, but as one of only two reporters lucky enough to interview her in the press room backstage with only a moment's advance notice, I figured it best not to push the issue. That, and I was completely star-struck: Adele was standing just feet away from me!
Besides my Adele interview, I also caught up with Skrillex, Gotye and members of Halestorm at the Grammys on Feb. 10, not to mention Janice Ian and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, plus the ladies from Pontoon!
