You don't have to grow a garden or belong to a CSA to add some local color to your table this spring. Here are some easy ways to incorporate local, sustainable products and habits into your meals:
- Use local honey or maple syrup, often available right in the grocery store, to make homemade salad dressing, sweeten desserts, or for dipping strawberries and apples
- Stop at a farm stand for salad greens, tomatoes, beans, and other early vegetables
- Buy fresh bread at the grocery bakery or a favorite local bakery
- Whip up some fresh local cream to make a dessert topping, or go one step further and make butter
- Choose local eggs from the farmer's market for breakfast, baking, mayonnaise, quiche, and other egg-based treats
- Make a cheese board with local cheeses, bread, and fruits
- Save your tomato seeds, avocado pits, and other seeds to germinate and grow into house plants
- Buy napkins made from recycled paper, or use washable table linens and napkins
- Only run your dishwasher when it's full, and don't use the "heat dry" setting
