When it comes to chocolate milk, there is milk to which chocolate is added and there is chocolate dairy beverage. 2% Sealtest milk contains partly skimmed milk, vitamin A palmitate, and vitamin D3. A 250 ml serving provides 130 calories, 3 g of saturated fat, 20 mg of cholesterol, 110 mg of sodium, 11 g of sugar, 9 g of protein and is said to provide 30 percent of the daily value of calcium.
3.25% Sealtest milk contains milk and vitamin D3. A 250ml serving provides 160 calories, 5 g of saturated fat, 30 mg of cholesterol, 110 mg of sodium, 11 g of sugar, 9 g of protein, and is said to provide 30 percent of the daily value of calcium.
Since vitamin A palmitate is added to 2% milk and not to 3.25% milk, 2% milk provides 15 percent of the daily value of vitamin A and 3.25% milk provides 10 percent.
Natrel milk values are the same however, the daily values of other vitamins found in milk, for example riboflavin, vitamin B12 and zinc are listed on the label. Natrel Pure Organic milk contains organic milk.
Quebon milk values are no different and the brand is said to be the most popular in Quebec.
When chocolate is added to milk, for better or worse, the nutrition values change. Adding Hershey’s chocolate syrup involves adding a liquid that contains high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, cocoa, sugar, potassium sorbate, salt, mono and diglycerides, xanthan gum, polysorbate 60, vanillan, and artificial flavour. Some question the purpose of adding a long list of ingredients given that the flavour, at least in part, is artificial and the liquid mimics the taste of chocolate.
Sealtest chocolate dairy beverage contains milk, modified milk ingredients, cocoa powder, and sugar. Today, according to Canadian regulations, “milk” that contains modified milk ingredients cannot be called “milk”. Sealtest milk and milk products are locally sourced and, as all Canadian milk, contain no rBST hormones, antibiotics, preservatives or pesticides.
Sealtest chocolate milk can still be found in 250ml and 500ml containers and contains partly skimmed milk, modified milk ingredients, sugar, cocoa, colour, salt, carrageenan, artificial flavour, vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D3.
Valrhona fine cocoa powder is pure, un-sweetened, and very popular among chocolate lovers and pastry chefs. For fabulous and full flavoured chocolate milk, adding this cocoa powder to milk is a fine choice. Some may find it necessary to add a small amount of sugar. Valrhona is not the only available pure, unsweetened chocolate powder. For those looking, reading the label goes a long way.
