Each morning in Columbia South Carolina begins similarly for me as I enjoy my “Frappe Mocha” and begin “Googling” addiction topics in an ongoing effort to write this column. For unexplainable reasons, I seem to have an intense desire for alcoholics and drug addicts to at least have the opportunity at “Living Sober” that I have enjoyed now for more than ten years. This is something I was unable to achieve for many years under my on power.
Without exception, a nearby TV is typically on which I usually pay very little attention to. For months now, an annoying commercial has been hammering through to my senses that I can no longer sit idly by without commenting on. It seems once again, that California would like to lead us all into a torturous bitter end as a commercial for an organization calling itself a “Treatment Center” by the name of “Passages Malibu” claims to “CURE” alcoholism and drug addictions and is “NOT A TWELVE STEP PROGRAM”!
Today… I have finally heard this claim ALL I can stand!
Claims of this nature will lead a great many people to a terribly painful and bitter death as far as this Examiner is concerned.
The self-righteous claim that “Passages Malibu” can CURE alcoholism is both a very dangerous statement as well as an immediate path to failure. The simple connotation of “CURE” implies alcoholics and addicts can walk out of and away from Passages Malibu and continue their practice of drinking and drugging without experiencing any more negative consequences. Does any thinking, (SOBER), person truly believe this nonsense?
I long ago admitted to not being the “sharpest tool in the shed” you might say. Long ago I accepted I am the cause of horrific costly consequences with my on alcohol use. I have long since known that I am a fairly simple farm boy from the rural south-east USA. But even I know there is NO SUCH THING AS A CURE for an alcoholic like me! For people that are like me, for US to drink is for US to DIE…. Period.
