So goes the debate as to whether addiction is a mental illness, or does it stem from your environment. Some believe that you have an addictive gene in your genetic makeup within your DNA that you inherit from your family. Once you are exposed to whatever that addictive behavior/chemical is your "addictive gene" wakes the monster within and the addiction is born. Look at alcoholics, that is where most studies and PET brain scans come into the picture as positive proof of addiction being genetic. They show the brain make-up of an addict different from that of a non-addict in relation to chemicals. The jury is out as to whether your environment, your genes, or a product of both is the addiction formula. That would make the most sense as your are the sum total of all your experiences.
Lindsey Lohan has an addictive history, as well does her mother, Dina and father, Michael. Micheal was on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinsky and was treated for alcohol and cocaine. Lindsey, while at the Betty Ford clinic demanded her prescribed drug Adderall, thinking that she needed it while under the assumption she had ADHD, a mental illness. She found out at the Betty Ford clinic she did not have that diagnosis. She is no longer taking the Adderall and informed Oprah she was an alcoholic in a recent interview Lindsey currently remains transferring to another rehab to continue her journey to sobriety.
