Why not add a little extra uniqueness to your cake with a little help of some products already on the market? You can add a whole lot to your cake just by checking out some of the candies that are out there.
Whether it is a Christmas cake or a Baby Shower cake, or whatever cake you are making, you can dress the sides up just by putting candy all the way around it. In the slideshow provided here, there is a sweet little duckie Baby Shower cake that I've used twisted Marshmallow candy for. The look I was going for was a tub of water that breaks, spilling the water out into a puddle, and the duckies playfully slipping down the falls, enjoying every minute of it. Since it was a Baby Shower, I wanted the soft, pastel colors that the marshmallow twists provided. Sweet!
For the Christmas cake, what better candy to use than the sweet mint sticks they sell during the holidays every year? I made both single layers and double layers using the sticks. For the single layer cakes, I simply cut the sticks in half. There are many other mint sticks available during Christmas time that can be used as well. Just be creative and have fun!
There are other items available to use other than candy. Please check out my article on using Rolled Wafer Cookies for the sides for a "Basket" look http://www.examiner.com/article/baskets-and-tubs-with-the-help-of-rolled-wafers and also my article on using Chocolate Covered Breadsticks to decorate a cake http://www.examiner.com/article/awesome-chocolate-covered-breadstick-cake
Just have fun and be creative! Soon you'll be finding yourself coming up with ideas for cakes everytime you see stick candy in the store! Enjoy!
