Have you wanted to add wall sconces to your foyer, fireplace surround or on either side of your bed but you have held off because you can't or don't want to snake wires inside your walls? Until recently surface wires were covered in some type of plastic conduit that quite frankly looked a bit ugly. This issue has create a new product that gives you some new electrical opportunities. It's called 'flat wire'.
Flat wire is sold by the roll or as part of a kit. With the kit you are instructed to replace the closest outlet cover. The new cover has a slot along the bottom edge. The flat wire acts like a thin tape that you can adhere directly to the wall surface. For the best results you can apply joint compound over the tape with a drywall knive and it will completely disappear. Sand the compound surface smooth with the wall and you can paint or wallpaper directly over the wire. It will be visually invisible. This nifty new product allows you to put low light sconces in close proximity to any outlet and it's all done on the inside surface of your wall.
Flat wire is designed to fold to create corners so you can wire over to the bottom of the special outlet cover. Since the product is still quite new, pay special attention to the size and type of light fixture you pair with the wire. This is definitely a do-it-yourself type installation that is geared toward an average skill level homeowner or renter. So, bring on the light!
Tips: Sconces should be placed at eye level for the average height person. Select a style that fits well with your decor and your homes architectural style.
