Adam West approves of new ‘Batman’ star Ben Affleck

While the Internet is buzzing over the cast for the upcoming movie “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” a TV legend has already given his seal of approval for the man who will fill his cape, er, his shoes. On Friday, People reported that original “Batman” star Adam West thinks Ben Affleck will make a great caped crusader.

"My feeling is that Ben Affleck will be really good simply because he's a great talent," West, 85, told the magazine during an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con. "And I'd be very interested in seeing him in the role."

West, who starred in the campy “Batman” TV series in the 1960s, even offered a piece of advice to his 41-year-old successor: "Just make the costume work for you, Ben,” he said.

But not everyone is in favor of seeing Academy Award winner Affleck in the role of the classic character. Earlier this year, actor Seth Green slammed the choice.

“Modern mainstream is accepting of interpretations of these characters with more gravitas, you know. We're past the time of Adam West's kind of goofy interpretation of Batman,” Green said during an appearance on “Larry King Now,” according to The Wrap. “If this movie is meant to be the idealistic alien, humans before all else Superman, and this is supposed to be the grizzled weathered Batman who's been living in Gotham, fighting crime himself for 10 years, you need a guy who's older, you need a guy who's got more weight, you need a guy that a Henry Cavill Superman is gonna be actually scared of.” Green did approve of Michael Keaton’s take on Batman in the early 1990s, as well as Christian Bale’s “Batman” trilogy.

On Friday, CNN posted the first close-up of Ben Affleck's Batman, a profile shot which was revealed for Comic-Con attendees. In addition to the photo, Affleck's cape and cowl from the upcoming movie were displayed on the convention floor.

Adam West also reunited with former cast mates Burt Ward and Julie Newmar at the Comic-Con panel to celebrate the release of “Batman: The Complete Television Series.” The collection, due out on November 11, will include all 120 episodes of the show, which ran from 1966 to 1968, and will feature collectible extras like an exclusive Hot Wheels replica Batmobile and vintage trading cards.

West told USA Today that while the “Batman” movie franchise is big, his “little TV show” set the precedent. "The new movies have so much talent and expertise and production values, but our little TV show and our earlier movie go on and on," he said."We're not grotesque in any way. We're maybe bizarre and zany. We have the splash, the adventure, the costumes (and) the crazy villains for the kids and the adults enjoy the satire."

For the upcoming movie, Henry Cavill stars as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is set to open May 6, 2016.
