Although I'm classified under the film examiner, I felt the need to write an article about the concert I saw last night with Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp from the Broadway musical, RENT. The two Broadway and film stars shared the stage in Town Hall and rocked the house.
Adam and Anthony had very distinct sets and anecdotes to share with us, including songs off their album, different Broadway shows, and popular hits and music from RENT. Adam blew me away with his wide vocal range and instrumental talents. Not only did he wow the audience with his singing power, but also had light and genuinely funny stories to share. His comfortable posture on stage, plus accents mixed with great comedic timing and some conversation with the audience was fantastic.
Anthony hit the stage with his band after intermission and the crowd lost no steam for applause. He kept his stories short and sweet and sang his pale face off. Songs like ‘Video killed the Radio Star,’ ‘Chasing Cars,’ and ‘Visits to You,’ dedicated and inspired by his mother’s last year battling cancer were highlights of the set.
As wonderful as the two men are apart, the sensational impact on the crowd that they have together is larger than life. Hearing them sing ‘What You Own,’ and ‘Seasons of Love’ side by side, blending the sounds of a baritone and tenor was in no other term but, stupid-good. Nine men (including the bands), two sets and three encore performances later, the house stood until there was nothing left to sing.
If Adam and Anthony are back in town with another concert, I suggest buying tickets as soon as possible.
