Adam Lambert: Gay Role Model?

Paula Abdul leaving American Idol?

Did Ryan Seacrest cost Paula Abdul American Idol?

Adam Lambert gay?  The question has finally been answered.  Lambert came out publicly in Rolling Stone magazine, the issue to hit streets Friday, June 12, 2009. In the issue, where he graces the coveted spot of Rolling Stone magazine cover, he not only reveals his sexuality, but also that he gets high, has used experimental drugs, and found Kris Allen to be the cute guy out of all the American Idol contestants.

“He's the one guy that I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type, except that he has a wife," Lambert said in his interview.

The issue puts to rest questions that many held during the American Idol season as to whether or not Adam Lambert was gay.

I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I’m gay." Adam tells Rolling Stone and many would agree. With photos surfacing early in the contest of Adam Lambert in drag, kissing his boyfriend and attending the Burning Man festival, many knew that he was gay. Lambert never denied it, he never admitted it, but he never said, “No, I’m not gay.” Leaving many to assume that he was.

Though many aren’t surprised that Adam Lambert is gay, the question still remains as to whether or not the fact that Adam is gay cost him the title of American Idol.

“I was worried that coming out would be so sensationalized that it would overshadow what I was there to do, which was sing. I’m an entertainer, and who I am and what I do in my personal life is a separate thing. It shouldn’t matter. Except it does. It’s really confusing.” Adam states in his Rolling Stone interview.

Unfortunately for Lambert, he never needed to make a public statement, the speculation over his sexuality followed him throughout the contest and many feel, unrightfully caused Kris Allen to be named the winner. There have been allegations by American Idol viewers that the contest is rigged, and that Kris Allen was given extra help in winning after Danny Gokey’s departure.

An American Idol viewer, who declined to be identified, stated that she felt a gay man wasn’t appropriate for an American Idol, and though she believed Lambert was more talented than the other contestants, she didn’t feel he was the best role model for her teenage children, she voted for Allen.

When it comes to being a role model, however, Lambert states that he isn’t interested in becoming a civil rights activist for the gay community,

"I’m trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader." He tells Rolling Stone.

The effect his coming out will have on his teenage, girl fans remains a mystery. But the world won’t need to wait long for the answer. Lambert has just signed a record deal with 19 Entertainment Ltd, owned by Simon Fuller, American Idol creator. His album is due out in fall.

"she didn’t feel he was the best role model for her teenage children"

That's fine. But for other moms with kids who are different from the norm, Adam is a wonderful role model. I don't think drug use is a good thing; newsflash, it's the parents who should be having this dialogue with their kids, not leaving all the parenting up to someone else. And drug use is just one aspect of Adam. He clearly has his stuff together; he's not a junkie. How about all the other aspects of him? Confident, gracious, polite, loves his family, amazing singer, proud of his sexuality? That is a role model I want my kids to have.

Adam is a role model for ANYBODY (it's meaningless to mention "gay"). As a young man, he had bad/wild experiences in his life as most of us.
The first important thing is that he learned a lesson from each of these “bad” experiences and finally he emerged as a strong and determined person.
The second very important thing that is overlooked in our society is his strong connection with his family. Even our days when he is such a complex, strong and independent personality, regardless where he is located, he is part of his family and relies on their advice. His mom always travels with him for help and support. Isn’t THIS GREAT?

Adam you are an inspiration !
