Actress & singer Samantha Newark brings Jem to Bellevue

Nashville actress and singer Samantha Newark, best known as the voice for both Jem and Jerrica on the highly popular animated television series "Jem & The Holograms" was the special guest speaker at the January meeting of the Plantation Belles Doll Club on Jan. 5 in Bellevue, TN. Newark brought her British mother with her, and they both shared fond stories of their lives in Africa where they first discovered Samantha's talent for singing.

The mother-daughter duo described auditions for television shows where Samantha was invariably waiting with fellow hopefuls Helen Hunt and Justine Bateman, because all three young actresses were frequently sent to the same casting calls.

However, it was Newark's voice that earned her the dual role of Jem and Jerrica on the 1980s animated TV show "Jem & The Holograms,"  a show which is still popular on "The Hub" today. Newark brought her collection of memorabilia with her, including two Jem dolls,  and she talked about some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of playing Jem, as well as her current participation in Jem Cons which became popular a few years ago.

Newark talked about her passion for music, signed autographs, posed for photos, and endeared herself to the doll club who are all now definitely "Jem Girls" if they weren't before.

Club members brought their Jem dolls and the 2012 Plantation Belles club dolls were handed out to members. Newark's mother also did a short but interesting presentation on some of the dolls by doll artist Robin Woods. See the slideshow for more photos.
