Actress leaving 'Downtown Abbey': Mrs. O'Brien leaving the show

An actress leaving "Downtown Abbey" has been countered by another big name actress returning to the popular PBS show. According to the NY Times on March 3, Shirley MacLaine will return to the series as Martha Levinson while Siobhan Finneran will leave the series.

Siobhan Finneran portrayed Mrs. O'Brien, the housemaid on the series, and said in a recent interview that she was "not doing anymore." Finneran described her character as a despicable human being that was great for her to play. She also said she enjoyed her job of playing the character that made everyone else's lives miserable.

The exit for the actress leaving "Downtown Abbey" was amicable and the door has been left open by the show's producers for her to return at a later date if she chooses to.

Also leaving the show is actor Dan Stevens, whose character Matthew Crawley was killed in an auto accident on the show. Season four will surely start with the characters dealing with that character's passing.

However, in better "Downtown Abbey" news, Shirley MacLaine, who first appeared in season three, said she will return for season four. Joining her in the cast for the upcoming season will be Tom Cullen, Harriet Walter and Julian Ovenden.
