Joan Benedict Steiger has been a familiar face since the earliest days of television. She had notable appearances on the original Candid Camera along with The Steve Allen Show. Her impressive career has also spanned stage and screen.
Joan admits, “I’m still learning after all these years.”
With an incredible fresh outlook, this veteran actress still finds each role a new challenge to experience, with new terrain to explore.
Joan was a dancer as a child and following her earlier television appearances, she had roles on General Hospital and Days of Our Lives.
Today, she is still dedicated to all facets of the acting craft, including numerous stage productions from classics, modern comedies to her acclaimed solo shows, Leona, about Leona Helmsley and her autobiographical, The Loves of My Life.
One inspiring romance over a lifetime is quite an accomplishment for most of us, however Joan has had the good fortune to have three devoted men in her life. John Myhers, also a veteran of the stage, was her first husband. They were married for 30 years until John’s death.
Soon after, Joan was reunited with Academy Award-winning actor, Rod Steiger. They had known each other when Steiger was the industry’s hottest young performer and Joan, a star-struck ingénue. Decades later, their romance was rekindled and they were married. They worked and supported each other until 2002, when Rod passed away.
Joan fell in love once again with the veteran television actor, Jeremy Slate. They were together for several years before his death.
Joan says, “They all passed away from different forms of cancer, so it’s bittersweet. But they were three of the greatest guys in the world.”
Today, Joan immerses herself in every acting opportunity, including a recent appearance in Dollhouse on FOX and a starring role in the feature Dead Border. Recently, at the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival, this amazing actress received the Eternity Award for Lifetime Achievements that have made a lasting contribution to the world of theatre.
Now Joan is preparing to write her memoirs. Remembering the past with no regrets, she looks forward to a future of even more accomplishments. What an amazing, impressive woman and actress that continues to work in the art she loves.
