Actress Doris Day shocked and surprised her fans last night who had gathered in Carmel-by-the-Sea in order to celebrate her 90th birthday. Classic film fans and admirers of Day had joined with other like-minded Day devotees for a 'Sentimental Journey' weekend sponsored by the The Cypress Inn and the Doris Day Animal Foundation. Day's appearance had not been promoted as an official part of the evening event and her appearance at the celebration stunned participants.
Day's official birthday party was held at the Quail Lodge and Golf Club as part of a special travel package that included three fun-filled days of events including lodging at Day's The Cypress Inn located in the heart of Carmel, a pet fashion show, live entertainment, a silent auction, a raffle for a chance to win autographed, personal memorabilia from Day's own collection, and surprise guests, one of whom was Day herself.
Day spent time with all of her fans and met many of the visitors from all over the US, Great Britain, and Canada. A Canadian Classic Film fan was able to meet her, take photos, and share her enthusiasm with members of her Facebook pages, Going to the TCM Festival and Sue Sue's TCM Festival Friends, and proclaimed yesterday evening that "Doris is here!" in her initial comments to her friends as the ecstatic fan was delighted by Day's attendance, and cherishes her memories of Day's birthday celebration. Some fans attending the birthday celebration will also travel to Hollywood next in order to attend another annual cinematic event, The Turner Classic Film Festival 2014 at The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, with classic film screenings offered at local venues like the TCL Chinese Theatre (formerly Grauman's) and The Egyptian.
The event continues through April 5 in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
