Television and film actress Danai Gurira plays a newlywed faced with lofty cultural expectations in director Andrew Dosunmu’s new drama “Mother of George” premiering in theaters this weekend. Gurira stars as "Adenike" a Nigerian woman in the indie film whose trying to settle into a new life in Brooklyn. She recently spoke with the Associated Press about what she loved about her character.

If the Iowa-born Gurira looks familiar it’s because the actress stars as “Michonne” on the popular AMC television series “The Walking Dead”. In addition to acting, Gurira is also a successful playwright. This is the second film she’s starred in directed by Dosunmu. The two worked together on 2011’s “Restless City”.
