It is 1951 and Rosalind Franklin is a scientist with a Ph.D. from Cambridge University (class of 1945). In post war America female scientists were the exception and while her male colleagues are addressed as “Doctor”, Rosalind is simply addressed as “Miss”.
From 1951 through 1953, Franklin was a researcher at King’s College in London, England. Because of her quest for “absolute precision” in her research she could be abrasive at times with those not dedicated to research as she was which led to her being labeled “unfeminine” during her tenure at the college.
“Photograph 51” is in reference to an x-ray diffraction picture that Rosalind took in 1952 of strands of DNA. It is from this photograph and her own detailed calculations that James Watson and Frances Crick were able to construct the first model of the double helix structure of DNA for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize. Franklin’s contribution was never acknowledged by either Watson or Crick.
The cast of “Photograph 51” consists of Sally Groth* as Rosalind Franklin, Arthur Chu as Francis Crick, Benjamin Gregg as James Watson, Keith E. Stevens* as Maurice Wilkins and Zach Griffin as Ray Gosling.
