Actor Gary Sinise stops by Cincinnati State to visit with veteran graduates

A group of 11 military veterans received a visit today from actor Gary Sinise, known for his roles on CSI and the movie Forrest Gump. In Forrest Gump, he played Lt. Dan Taylor, a war veteran that loses both of his legs in Vietnam.

Sinise runs a foundation that supports veterans and is involved with the Disabled American Veterans group.

Veteran often find it difficult to transition back into civilian life. After several years in the military, they have to transition back into civilians, which includes finding good paying jobs to support themselves and their families.

The 11 veterans became the first group to complete the “Get Skills to Work” program through Cincinnati State. The group studied at the Cincinnati State Workforce Development Center in Evendale. The veterans studied blueprint reading and other valuable skills.

Several large companies like GE and Lockheed Martin are working with the college to tap into the veteran employment pool to find future employees.

The goal is to place veterans into advanced manufacturing careers. The program is expected to expand into other cities.
