Actor Denzel Washington is not only one of the top actors on the screen; he is also a big star on the Broadway stage. According to a report by the Associated Press on Feb. 18, the “2 Guns” star is planning on making a habit of appearing on Broadway more.
As an actor who has won both a Tony and Oscar for his acting performances on screen and on the stage, Washington is currently set to play Walter Lee Younger in Lorraine Hansberry’s classic play “A Raisin in the Sun.” Preparing for the play has reminded him that he has a lot more time because his kids are all grown up.
“Up until nine years ago, I hadn’t been here in 15 years, from 1990 until 2005. Basically, that was because of raising my kids, my wife and I.”
Back then, it was nearly impossible to raise a family and make a commute from California to New York during a Broadway show schedule.
“It’s impossible to commute from California to New York, or New York to California doing an eight-show week schedule. So once they got old enough, I could start coming back.”
Denzel Washington’s last appearance on Broadway earned him a Tony award for best actor. In 2010, he starred in the 2010 revival of August Wilson’s “Fences.”
The actor says he hopes to be back more frequently on the Broadway stage, which is a treat for fans of theatre.
