I don't like to think about politics, I don't talk politics, and I never write about politics until now.
I have been watching this man on television for years and recently I have watched as this man has shared with us the very sad journey and process of losing his mother, extraordinary actress Jeanne Cooper. He is very level headed and has so much good common sense reasoning. It really makes you wonder why our guys in the government can't and don't think like him. I would love to see him run for President and if not President, at the very least Vice President. On the same ticket, I would like to see Meg Whitman. If you don't know who she is you should. She is one of the most intelligent women in the United States more than qualified to run this country. I don't know what Party Bernsen is affiliated with if any, but I do believe he would truly be for the People's Party.
This morning I found this status update from Bernsen in my email box. It so touched me it moved me to write and publish this piece. 143,666 like what he had to say in just a few short hours. I defy anyone to read this and not think that this man, if he was willing would make a good President. Wouldn't that be wonderful if the People were truly able to pick their candidates? This is what Bernsen had to say in his status update:
"Been holding off on this but time to address the elephant in the room; Syria
First off, no sides here, no liberal, no conservative, no God fearing, no atheist... just a discussion because we are in a deep hole that if we're not careful, will only get deeper in and harder to dig out from. Tread lightly, very lightly...
There will be no winners here. Too late. Too much hate, and not ours. Somebody else's for a change.
So here I go... To begin, there is NO PLACE in this world to gas your own people, NONE! We all drew that line in the sand many, many years ago... BUT, here's what I don't quite get... it's okay to nuke them? Or just shoot them? If I'm in a brawl, I'm sorry, but I don't look the other guy in the eye and say "fight fair now, mate." No I just kick ass with what ever I have to survive and win. That's war. That's human - Or at least the lowest part of being human. Yes, it's wrong, dead wrong to poison people, especially children, but honestly, I'm not okay with any of it. Killing is killing and dead is dead. And however a child dies is not right, not in my book.
So, perhaps we should be trying everything in our power, with love and respect to step in if needed, and bring reconciliation. That said, I'm not an idiot or an idealist and realize how little this would actually mean or what change it would bring. Hasn't worked for Israel and Palestine issue and those "talks and peace negotiations" have been going on forever. To be honest, I don't even know what this "civil war" is about? Assad is a dictator? Okay, and our own government spying on us doesn't have some shade of that? Mind you, only a shade, but still... People have to sometimes work their own shit out. Sorry for the word, but that was my mom and the way she'd say it.
Then there's this, THIS ISN'T OUR CIVIL war. We had ours and lost - I think it was something like 50,000 men, women and children, but we duked it out, and it was ugly, ugly as all hell, but we finally came to a resolution. And here we are today. Not perfect, but here we are. Sometimes a family just needs to work it out for themselves and keep the nosey neighbors out.
YES, YES, YES, poisoning your own people with gas is wrong, I'll say it a thousand times here, WRONG, WRONG, TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, DEMONIC... I don't want anybody to think I"m any where near "okay" with this, but is it our place to step into this minefield? Is it okay for our sons and daughters to die for this?
I love being part of a country that protects the world, I love that about us. We still take crap daily for being, ugly, loud Americans, but screw them, we are first in line, giving up our children to defend everyone's peace and safety. I love that about being an American. But I think right now we have other battles, here at home. I wont' even get into the money aspects, fighting a war (that's not ours) with money we don't have. That alone just doesn't make sense. Feed and educate EVERY AMERICAN child first. Then you can talk about desert... sorry, I mean war. Come on, am I blind here, am I missing something, we're broke! Our children are hungry. Our schools are broken. Kids are shooting people because they're bored. THERE'S A CIVIL WAR, and it's right in our own backyard. I'll give my four sons to fight that war! And if they'll take me, I'll limp into the battlefield right with them and give every penny I have.
Then there's this... so we make a stand, send some missiles, blow up some buildings and say "shame on you." What does that do? IT WILL NOT SOLVE THE UNDERLYING PROBLEMS OF THE REGION, nor, in my opinion, will it even stop these insane regimes from doing it again. What it can do however, as this is my greatest fear... open up Pandora's box. The region is very divided here and each of us have our own allies behind us... but here's a scenario I fear most... those who hate us, now point every missile they own at Israel and the real shit hits the fan. I've been searching for years, for the single incident that will blow up the region and start the war none of us want to have. We all thought it would be over oil. Screw oil, buy a Prius, oil isn't the problem, it's underlying hate, putrid hate for one another. We send in missiles and then it's game on, for everyone. The shit will hit the fan. Forget a war we can't afford, will never win, this one could be the game changer, globally. All bets off.
I'm going to jump in again and reassure you... GASSING YOUR OWN PEOPLE IS WRONG AND SOMEHOW NEEDS TO BE PUNISHED. I don't want anyone to think I'm getting away from that. Not only does it need to be punished, it needs to be made impossible to ever happen again. Show me that plan, maps, details, of how we go in and destroy every ability for this to ever happen again, or at least for years and years. I might even get behind that.... but a few missile strikes (that will kill more children - albeit okay I suppose because we aren't gassing them) but a missile strike is like a slap on the wrist, it does nothing.
Let's change direction for a moment, not subject, but direction...
You know what I think happened with Bernie Madoff? I think the guy made a few bad decisions and though he could sneak by a few tricks here and there to make some money. But then he found himself in a hole, a pretty deep hole. But instead of coming clean and finding an honest way out, he panicked and starting scraping at the walls of that hole, doing anything he could to not only stop going deeper, but maybe climb out. But he didn't, he didn't come clean, he just started scrambling and in doing so the hole got deeper and deeper. Folks, that's where we are at. We made a stand about the Red Line. We dug ourselves a hole. And now we're frightened that if we don't back it up, we will loose respect of the region, the world. But if we start scrambling (missiles) I promise you, our hole will only get deeper and deeper.
Did I mention that gassing your own people with poison is wrong? Just want to make sure you know I know this.
It's time to stand still in the hole and figure the best way out. And one of those ways is to say, sorry, we spoke to soon, but we have our own problems to deal with. We want a stronger America because only with a stronger America can we come to your defense in the future. Sorry, we spoke to quickly, you don't like children being gassed, at minimum join us because we won't do this alone, if at all. Too many problems right now on the home front. We'll pray for you, we'll pray for your children, we'll pray that those who gas children connect with their maker and realize what they are doing is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG... but we can't come out to play right now... it's just raining too hard.
Bottom line, sometimes people just have to work their own shit out. Sorry, that was mom again. In the end, at least for me, I have the deepest belief that God is at the wheel and if a child is gassed in Syria, it has purpose, just as a child here in our country who is gunned down. Maybe it is so we all stand back for a moment and reflect on what we've become, what our human race has begun.
Ahhh, after all that, there it is..."time to reflect. Deep reflection of who we are and what we've become." I just don't believe it's time to act rash, strike back, deal a blow for blow, send a warning, spend what I don't have, turn my back on my own children, go ballistic and start blowing up shit... No, it's time to REFLECT on who we are and what we've become. God is at the wheel. Have faith in that, take a deep breath...
Are we even sure, absolutely sure we aren't being played? I don't have that answer and I truly don't. Again, time to stand down, take a breath, REFLECT. I believe my loving God will inform whoever has done this atrocity that it is wrong, they know it now, I believe that. I think a missile will only piss them off and stop them from reflecting. Each of us, almost everyone of us in our hearts no right from wrong... that, at least for me is my Divine connection to my loving God. He has placed that "peacemaker" in my heart. (that was a nice play on words...) But it's there, and now it's time to listen to it and dial down the ugly side of our humanity.
I ain't no Gandhi or Dr. King or Jesus, but that's how those folks operated.... I think I'll take a page from their playbook.
Tonight I pray for our loving God to reach out, to each of us and give us wisdom at this troubling time, this point where our humanity is at a crossroads... reach out to me, to my neighbor and those who would harm us and their own, reach out and clear a path to their heart so that they may know the simplicity, the beauty, the love, the grace of "right from wrong."
There, that's my missile... for what it's worth.
Love. Give it a chance. Trust God. Have faith. Send that to make a statement.
Written free form, no going back, sorry for the grammar, the spelling, and all else that makes no sense. Straight from the heart, it's the best I can do.
Mom, spread your love from wherever you are, that special love that was so potent... we need it."
This writers final thoughts on this and what is going on in this country and others. We need a change. Change starts with us. We have to change our way of thinking and dealing with things. Until we change, there can be no change. Listen to the song embedded in this video.
