According to NBC News on Feb. 28, 82-year-old Republican actor Clint Eastwood has joined more than 100 other Republicans and signed a brief to the Supreme Court in support of gay marriage.
A spokesman for the American Foundation for Equal Rights and a representative for Eastwood confirmed that the Oscar-winning director and actor had signed the brief, expected to be filed Thursday in California’s Proposition 8 case. Clint Eastwood, though a Republican, has strong Libertarian leanings and has been quite vocal about that.
A few of the others who have signed the brief are:
- Former governor John Huntsman of Utah
- Former governor Christine Todd Whitman of New Jersey
- Former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez
- Members of Mitt Romney’s and Senator John McCain’s presidential campaigns
A separate brief has been filed by Chris Kluwe of the Minnesota Vikings and Brendon Ayanbadejo of the Baltimore Ravens. Both athletes have been outspoken supporters of gay rights.
The Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case on March 26. The Justice Department is also urging the court to approve gay marriage in California.
