Actor can golf without a club, says Golden Globe winner George Clooney (video)

He might not be the best celebrity golfer in the world (Justin Timberlake may hold that distinction), but George Clooney showed good form during Sunday night’s Golden Globe awards. While accepting the Best Actor-Drama trophy for his role in "The Descendants," the former Sexiest Man Alive acknowledged his friend and fellow nominee Brad Pitt but saved a special tip o’ the visor for another screen star up for the same honor.

"I would like to thank Michael Fassbender for taking over the frontal nude responsibly that I had," Clooney remarked with a good-natured smirk about the "Shame" actor who portrayed a sex addict in the 2011 Steve McQueen-directed film. "Really Michael, honestly, you can play golf like this, with your hands behind your back."

Hands clasped behind his own posterior, Clooney mimed a golf swing that Tiger Woods’ coach Sean Foley would be hard-pressed to want to fiddle with and encouraged the 34-year-old German-born actor who apparently walks tall and carries a big stick. "Go for it man!" Clooney told a laughing Fassbender. "Do it!"

An E-Online columnist ran with the joke, posting a photo on Twitter of the would-be duffer with the caption, "anyone wanna play golf with me?"

Should he find a playing partner, Fassbender may prefer to walk the course rather than tool around in a caddy car. It seems his "X-Men: First Class" co-star, James McAvoy, almost ended the "Band of Brothers" actor with a golf cart dust-up during production of the 2011 film.

"We were going ‘round at incredible speeds of 12, 13 miles an hour...and we smacked into the back of a van," McAvoy, who was driving the buggy, told the New York Times’ David Itzkoff last year.

Clooney, by the way, plays to a 25 handicap, according to Golf & Life Magazine, and is something of a regular at Lake Como's Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club, which is close to the former "ER" doc’s Italian villa.
