Actor Anthony Mackie, whose filmography includes “Man on a Ledge” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” recently spoke with Phoenix Movie Examiner about a several of his projects, including the new crime drama “Gangster Squad.”
In “Gangster Squad,” which opens Friday, Jan. 11 at movie theaters throughout the Valley, Sean Penn plays a Brooklyn-born mob king who runs the show in this town with the protection of the police and the politicians who are under his control until a group of LAPD outsiders come together to try to tear his world apart. Mackie plays one of said outsiders. He is joined by Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Robert Patrick, Michael Pena and Giovanni Ribisi.
Question: In 100 words or less, what can you tell me about “Gangster Squad?”
Answer: “Gangster Squad” is set in 1949 Los Angeles. We play a misfit group of cops put together by the LAPD to take down legendary mob boss Mickey Cohen. It is a beautiful LA noir-type film. It has a [kick-butt] cast. There’s Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Sean Penn. And [Ruben Fleischer] is a really cool and interesting director. It looks amazing and the action sequences are kind of out of control as well. There are a lot of tommy guns.
