We recently sat down with Activision's Eric Hirshberg and were able to discuss the surprise success of the company's Skylanders series, which he attributes to the company's policy on making quality experiences. We asked him whether the NFC toy driven franchise would ever feature a standalone installment.
I think that the ensemble cast is kind of baked into the DNA of that game because it drives the selection of which toy you're going to use in any given situation. If the game ever got too focused on any single character, it would by nature be less about picking one toy up and putting another one on.
He elaborated that the huge variety of personalities and abilities is what has made the series so captivating. Switching characters is more than just a superficial change, with each toy offering different strategies to help players overcome various obstacles. He considers the ability to choose from a multitude of characters, and to navigate the world in various new ways, as two of the franchise's strong points.
In short, no, we probably won't see a standalone title. Skylanders: Swap Force was released earlier this month for the 3DS, Wii, Wii U, PS3 and Xbox 360. It will also be available as a launch title for Sony and Microsoft's next generation consoles when they ship next month.
