Action-comedy 'Iron Man 2' is coming, and guess who helped write the screenplay?

Robert Downey Jr. is returning in next summer's "Iron Man 2"

Go on, guess.  You'll never guess.  What's that?  You looked at the picture on the right and you've already put two and two together?  Well, that's OK.  Now that the mystery of "Who helped write the screenplay for 'Iron Man 2'" is solved, we can get right into the details.  They're all below, so keep on reading for the info, my gentle Examiner readers...

Yes, Robert Downey Jr. himself helped write the "Iron Man 2" screenplay, and if you know anything about the level of improv skills-- which are, in essence, writing-on-the-fly skills-- that Downey operates with, this is very good news indeed for the action-comedy.

Slash Film has their own story on the issue, and here's what they're saying about Downey Jr.'s involvement with the "Iron Man 2" script:

It sounds like there’s been a lot kitchen hands, if not exactly chefs, stirring ingredients into Iron Man 2. The first named screenwriter was Justin Theroux, the actor and famously a co-writer of Tropic Thunder; there’s also the Marvel brain trust made up of some of their brightest and best comic book talents; and now, Jon Favreau has revealed that Tony Stark’s off-screen alter-ego Robert Downey Jr. played a significant part in shaping the sequel’s screenplay.

It's not uncommon for actors-- especially actors as well-regarded in the industry as Robert Downey Jr. (oh, how times have changed, huh?)-- to lend a helping hand to a screenplay, especially one that lives and dies based upon the words coming out of the lead actor's mouth.  Slash Film correctly points out that Edward Norton also pulled this act not too long ago (though it was on the "Hulk" screenplay, so make of that what you will).  They go on to quote Empire Magazine, which states:

Robert is a real partner in the process. He’s been very involved in the screenplay. When he went away to do Sherlock Holmes he was still part of our creative process. Even in the first film, where he was originally a hired gun playing the role, he really stepped up to rewrite scenes - he’s a great writer, too. So we really are sharing the responsibilities.

Sounds good to us.  The first "Iron Man" was unexpectedly fantastic, made a bajillion dollars, and of course has now led to the inevitable sequel.  "Iron Man 2" will be released this summer, and finds Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark facing off against Mickey Rourke's "Whiplash" and Scarlett Johansson's "Black Widow" (she appears in skin-tight rubber/latex throughout the film, so a huge opening weekend is all but guaranteed).  Stay tuned for more "Iron Man 2" news as it becomes available, my precious snowflakes.

"Funny News: Church proves to be too loud for neighoring comedy club (with video)"-- in which we look at the strange case of the church that took on Austin's Cap City Comedy Club when the comedians claimed the preacher was being a bit too boisterous during the sermonizing.  You've gotta read it to believe it.

"Twilight: New Moon" parody is done entirely with puppets, will give you waking nightmares (with funny video)"-- in which we look at yet another funny "Twilight" parody, this one made entirely with puppets (of all things).  Look, at this point, there are more "Twilight" parodies than there are "Twilight" fans.  It's nuts.

"Funny Video of The Day: Two words-- 'Hipster Pilgrims' (with funny video)"-- in which we learn that hipsters aren't just for today.  Nope, turns out, they were being obnoxious all the way back to the time of the very first Thanksgiving.  Who knew?

"Weekend Box Office: 'Twilight: New Moon' buries 'Old Dogs' where no one will ever find it"-- in which we learn that "Twilight: New Moon" is absolutely destroying the competition at the box office, and that Robin Williams really needs to start reading his scripts.
