Pierce Brosnan in Mama Mia!
Pierce Brendan Brosnan is an Irish actor, film producer, and environmentalist who holds both Irish and American citizenship.
William Carmichael, Brosnan's stepfather, took him to see a James Bond film for the first time (Goldfinger), at the age of eleven. Later moving back to London, Brosnan was educated at Elliott School, a state secondary modern school in Putney, West London.
After leaving school at 16 Brosnan trained in commerical illustration but also trained at the Drama Centre in London for three years. He loved the feel of acting and how it made an impact on his life.
When I found acting, or it found me, it was a liberation. It was a stepping stone into another life, away from a life I had, and acting was something I was good at, something that was appreciated. That was a great satisfaction in my life."
After graduating from the Drama Centre in 1975 Brosnan began acting as an acting assistant stage manager at New York Theatre Royal, making his acting debut in Wait Until Dark.
Following a stage acting career he became famous in the television series Remington Steele with many film appearances as well. After Remington Steele ended in 1987 he went on to appear in several more films and television films, including The Fourth Protocol, The Deceivers, The Lawnmower Man, Mrs. Doubtfire, Death Train and Night Watch.
When James Bond film producer Albert R. Broccoli met Brosnan and said (referring to being a future Bond),
if he can act, he's my guy."
The Bond film, Goldeneye, was created with Dalton in mind. But when Dalton turned it down, Brosnan stepped in and on June 7, 1994 Brosnan was announced as the fifth actor to play Bond. He signed for a three-film deal with the option of a fourth. GoldenEye was the most successful (grossing) Bond film at the time.
In addition to portraying Bond, Brosnan also played a wide range of other roles in other films, in between the Bond films, as Brosnan had asked ahead if he could do that, work on other projects. So for every Bond film, he worked on at least two mainstream films, including several he produced (his own production company formed in 1996, Irish Dream Team).
In July 2004, it was decided that another actor would fit into the Bond shoes, and Brosnan announced that he was quiting the role stating
Bond is another lifetime, behind me."
Brosnan portrayed the secret agent James Bond in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day. Some films since his Bond days are The Thomas Crown Affair, Married Life, Mama Mia!, The Greatest, The Ghost, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (2010) and also for next year, Rugrats.
Since leaving the role of James Bond, Brosnan has starred in films such as The Matador and Seraphim Falls. He became an American citizen in 2004. In his later years, he has been known for his charitable work and environmental activism. He is currently working on the projects The Topkapi Affair, Caitlin and The Big Biazarro. He starred in the new movie musical Mamma Mia! as Sam Carmichael. He is now to narrate the new Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends shows.
