Act of chivalry could send '24' star Kiefer Sutherland back to jail

Kiefer Sutherland had to be drunk. How else to explain his irrational behavior outside NYC nightspot SubMercer?

The incident is still under investigation, meaning I'm just regurgitating allegations. Still, I’m inclined to believe Sutherland went overboard in last night's scuffle with Proenza Schouler women's wear designer Jack McCollough.

Celebrities flooded SoHo hot spots following the MET Costume Institute Gala. Then came the fracas. Sutherland saw McCollough shove actress Brooke Shields, rushed to her defense, and demanded an apology. Although McCollough and Shields are reportedly friends, the confrontation escalated into heated words. Sutherland wrestled with McCollough, then reportedly broke his nose in a violent head-butt.

I’m no expert on celebrity etiquette, but the only way I’d head-butt someone for shoving Brooke Shields would be to clear a better spot for myself at the bar.

A rep for Shields said the actress wasn’t injured leading me to believe McCollough somehow antagonized Sutherland into the head-butt. Maybe he refused to pay homage. Not everyone is a fan of his popular TV show “24.” I can see it now. I'll show you Jack Bauer who!

Sutherland may have also become agitated if casual mention of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame produced nothing but a blank stare. I’m guessing anyone associated with Proenza Schouler might be more impressed with Tim Gunn on speed dial, but then I could fit everything I know about NYC designers on the head of a pin.

Maybe the same is true for Sutherland.

Or maybe the actor can no longer distinguish himself from his daredevil "24" character, ex-government agent Jack Bauer. Sadly, after last night's incident, it may no longer matter.

“24” has suffered numerous production delays, notably a long stretch in 2007-2008 that allowed Sutherland to serve a 7-week prison sentence for DUI. In addition to jail time, he was ordered to enroll in an 18-month alcohol treatment program, fined more than five hundred dollars, and placed on five years probation.

If too intoxicated to distinguish between McCollough and a stunt dummy, Sutherland may have inadvertently violated the terms of his probation. Who knows whether “24” could survive any more delays in production.

Pardon the affront to chivalry, but not even the honor of Brooke Shields is worth risking that.

THIS JUST IN: On July 21st, People magazine reports that Sutherland has been cleared of all charges and the investigation into possible probation violations dropped. "24" fans breathe a collective sigh of relief.
