ACT II Community Theater presents Steel Magnolias; A story of diabetes

ACT II kicks of its 19th season with Steel Magnolias.

The play focuses on the camaraderie of six softhearted “magnolias” [women] with steely dispositions who face life’s difficult times.  Robert Harling wrote Steel Magnolias while dealing with his sister’s death from kidney failure as a result of her type-1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes. The play premiered in 1987, with a blockbuster movie following in 1989.

ACT II will honor the memory of Harling's sister with a collection drive at the end of each show.  The money will go to JDRF, a national research charity whose mission is to manage, and eventually cure, type-1 diabetes.

Since 1987, research into diabetes has reduced complications such as kidney failure.  This is especially true for women like Harling's sister, who suffered complications after giving birth. Research into proper disease management changed pregnancy from a dangerous risk into a manageable and joyous event for women with insulin-dependent diabetes.

The play runs weekends from February 10th through the 19th at St. Peter’s Performing Arts Centre in St. Peters City Hall.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.act2theater.com or by calling 636-336-0033.
